Chief Accountant / Financial Controller

About the role

The client, a ship management company, is seeking a senior finance professional to lead the accounting function from its Limassol office. The role combines oversight of financial reporting, cash management and vessel‑related accounting with team leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and supervise the Accounts Department, allocating responsibilities and prioritising workloads.
• Take overall responsibility for the accuracy, completeness and integrity of the company’s accounting records and related group entities.
• Oversee the general ledger, month‑end and year‑end closing processes, including accruals, provisions, reconciliations and other adjustments.
• Review and ensure the accuracy of accounts payable, accounts receivable, balance‑sheet, intercompany and related‑party balances.
• Prepare and review monthly financial and management reports such as P&L, balance sheet, cash‑flow, ageing analysis and intercompany reconciliations.
• Analyse financial results, variances and unusual transactions, providing clear insight to management.
• Manage cash, bank reconciliations, payment controls, cash‑flow forecasting and short‑term liquidity.
• Supervise accounting and financial control for vessel operations, budgets, management fees and intercompany transactions.
• Ensure timely VAT, tax and statutory compliance, coordinating with external advisers.
• Lead statutory audits, act as the main contact for external auditors and prepare audit schedules.
• Maintain and improve accounting policies, internal controls and segregation of duties.
• Ensure effective use of the company’s ERP system (DANAOS) and support process automation.

Required profile

• University degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related discipline.
• Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CPA or equivalent).
• 7–10 years of relevant experience, including senior roles such as Chief Accountant or Financial Controller.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS, VAT, taxation and statutory accounting requirements.
• Proven experience with month‑end and year‑end closing and managing statutory audits.
• Extensive experience in cash‑flow management, bank reconciliations and accounts payable.
• Previous experience supervising an accounting team.
• Excellent communication skills in English; Greek is an advantage.

Required skills

• Strong Excel skills.
• Good knowledge of ERP/accounting systems, particularly DANAOS.
• Understanding and application of IFRS.
