Head of Payments – Lead Strategy & Infrastructure

About the role

We are seeking a Head of Payments to own and evolve our payment strategy, drive revenue growth, and optimise the end‑to‑end payment experience. This player‑coach position combines hands‑on technical work with strategic leadership across Tier 1‑2 markets.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the company’s payment strategy, balancing growth, retention, performance and scalability.
• Own the full payment infrastructure: multi‑PSP orchestration, acquiring strategy, routing, MID portfolio and processing resilience.
• Improve subscription billing metrics – approval rate, renewal performance, failed‑payment recovery and involuntary churn.
• Manage PSP and acquirer relationships, including onboarding, commercial negotiations and performance monitoring.
• Control payment economics – processing cost, provider mix and routing efficiency.
• Oversee payment risk: fraud, chargebacks, refunds, disputes and compliance with card‑scheme monitoring programs (VAMP, SMMP).
• Build a mature, self‑sufficient Payments function with clear team structure, reporting and automation.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally with Product, Growth, Billing Engineering, Finance and Legal on revenue‑impacting initiatives.
• Lead and grow the Payments team, introducing AI tools and automation into support workflows.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in payments, acquiring, billing or payment operations on the merchant side (B2C).
• Hands‑on experience with subscription payments, including initial charges, renewals, retries, dunning and recovery.
• Proven track record scaling multi‑PSP/multi‑acquirer infrastructures and negotiating directly with providers.
• Demonstrated impact on key metrics such as approval, renewal or recovery rates.
• Strong understanding of payment risk, chargebacks, fraud and card‑scheme monitoring.
• Experience building and managing teams and processes in international, multi‑product environments.
• Upper‑Intermediate English or higher.
